The United Nations' Progress in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2021 report shows that for decades, scientists have been explaining how humanity is driving the three major global crises of climate, biodiversity, and pollution, all of which are related to unsustainable production and consumption. Changing consumption and production patterns can help promote economic growth and decoupling human well-being from resource use and environmental impacts, and can also trigger the shift in biodiversity, climate, and overall sustainable development envisioned by global commitments. In 2020, a pilot review was conducted on approximately 4000 companies randomly sampled from the United Nations Global Compact database and the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Disclosure database, and it was found that 85% of companies reported minimum requirements for sustainability issues and 40% reported high-level requirements for such issues.
